A Vista Review From a Mac User

MSNBC has an odd little story written by Joe Hutsko of a Mac user who switched to Vista. Hutsko's claim to fame is that he used to work with John Sculley; as if that's impressive. In reading the story, mostly his reasoning for liking Vista is that it catches up with what other people have been providing for years. (ie: tabbed browsing)

Through the whole thing I was looking for a compelling example of Vista's vast improvements over Windows XP much less the Mac OS. I didn't find one but that might be partially because of some of the odd criteria Hutsko used for his judgments.

Here's an example of his take on things...

Another everyday favorite is system-wide search. Until Vista, the Mac had Windows beat. In fact, Vista's system-wide search in some ways beats the Mac because it requires only one keystroke -- the Windows key -- to bring up the Start menu, where you can immediately type. But though it's easier to get to, and does a pretty good job of finding stuff, I often needed to take it a step further to search places it normally doesn't. Whereas the Mac's Spotlight search always seems to find everything on the first pass.

Because hitting 2 keys (CMD F) on the Mac is soooooo much harder? That makes the Windows search "beat" the Mac search even if he has to run multiple searches on Vista?

Like I said, odd.

If you're a Mac or an XP user, it is a good, if annoying, read. Just read it for the info he passes along and make your own judgments. The spoiler is that after 3 different PC laptops and several weeks he switches back to his Mac. Still it makes a decent review.

(And thanks MMR for reminding me that links are a good thing in blogging. Ooops.)

Not that I'm impressed with OS X. I'm forced to use it at work and Apple has done something amazing: they've added unrecoverable blue screen crashes to the UNIX platform. I deliberately built a fast machine in December with XP Pro. I can safely ignore Vista for at least 5 years.
