The Vista Era Begins

Well 2 years late and a few billion over budget. Microsoft finally ships Vista.

Microsoft launches Vista version of Windows

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) launched Windows Vista for businesses on Thursday, unveiling the first major upgrade of its dominant operating system in five years and predicting that over 200 million people will run new Windows, Office or PC server software by the end of 2007.

Vista upgrades the operating system used on more than 90 percent of the world's computers and features translucent windows to make it easier to view items on the desktop, an improved search system, and improved reliability and security.

The world's largest software maker will not make Vista widely available for retail customers until January 30, giving computer manufacturers time to load the operating system onto new PCs.

It will be interesting to see if they make that Jan 30 date. If there are major problems with the business rollout they are in a pickle. If they miss a hard date, they'll be shellacked by pundits far and wide. But shipping a known flawed product is hardly the better option.

The first commercial struck me as odd... Apparently your customers will like you more if you run Vista. And they'll even give you more money.

Have your customers ever given you more business because they approved of your choice of operating systems?

Ah, but you see when they say "customers" they don't mean the customers of a graphic design company, candy store, telephone company or restaurant, but rather the customers of IT companies; i.e. this is directed at those that are to make software, hardware and associated solutions for Vista. At least, that was how I interpreted it.
