The Zune launched today... Did you notice? The much heralded "iPod Killer" has arrived with more of a whimper than a bang. On the week of its launch it can't get the media iPod gets every week.
Here's some interesting numbers from Google News.
A Google News search for the word Zune gets you 2,810 news stories.
A Google News search for the word iPod gets you "about" 14,000. They lost count.
Even if you assume that every story that has the word Zune in it also contains the word iPod, it still shows what a mountain Microsoft has in front of them. And most of the Zune stories are negative.
Meanwhile if you want to see CNN's take, Watch the video and make sure you catch the final comment. That about sums it up.

Microsoft Zune is the new M... (Below threshold)1. Posted by Eric | November 14, 2006 5:39 PM | Score: 0 (0 votes cast)
Microsoft Zune is the new Microsoft Bob. I don't see this going anywhere. Microsoft needs to go back and find some other more compelling feature to use that Ipod doesn't offer, such as Bluetooth, expandable memory, other functionality, etc. Without that, there is no reason to buy it over an Ipod. Frankly, even the name sucks.

The zune is just a rebranded Toshiba Gigabeat with some crippled WiFi thrown in.
Microsoft is capable of building outstanding hardware (see their mice & keyboards for examples). Get the team that made my wireless Intellimouse with the leather on the back and cut them loose on a portable media player, and you might end up with something worth buying.

What's a zune?
OK, I'm kidding, but seriously, the name sucks. And if someone gave me one, I'd spend the first 2 days trying to make it show me the bsod. You know it has one...
