I have to say going in, I have (had) a deep and long lasting love affair with HP products especially their printers. We're talking since before the LaserJet II redefined quality printers.
But for about the past year and a half, the drivers have just sucked. The hardware seems okay, but the drivers often won't even install. Today I had a brand new out the box Mac Mini and I was installing some HP All in One (I for get which, the cheap one.) Halfway thru the installer it bombed out saying there were already duplicate files in the folder. Huh?
And this is not an isolated incident. I've had horrible drivers on the last 5 or 6 hp products I dealt with. I can't even describe the problems I have with their Windows drivers. Just getting them to install is often a black art.
I'm just guessing but I bet if I googled enough I'd find they outsourced the print driver division to India or something about 18 months ago..
Or maybe it's just me.

No, it's not just you.
They are absolutely horrible!
I recently bought a brand new HP computer with all the bells and whistles. My HP 'all-in-one' was less than a year old.
After about three complete installation failures, I finally got it to install (somewhat). All the features now worked except that it wouldn't scan. Or, the hardware would work normally but when it tried to open the scan software it would crash the computer.
Their computer tech support wouldn't help because this was a printer problem I was told. The printer tech support gave some lame reason they wanted $39.00 to tell me how to fix it. They couldn't however and still charged me (but would take that amount off the purchase of a new all-in-one)!
I just trashed it and bought a new all-in-one from another company.
However, I found out later that the HP all-in-one software had ruined the software that controlls my wireless keyboard and mouse (came with the new HP computer)
So HP printer/fax/scan drivers destroy HP wireless keyboard/mouse drivers!!!???

I recently purchased an HP all-in-one with my Intel Mac Mini. Unfortunately, the scanning drivers weren't universal and just sapped my memory running under Rosetta. In Activity Monitor, it looked like something in the 100s of MBs, if I remember correctly!
And there was this scanning daemon that just polled the printer every few seconds, to "see" if the scanning button had a been pressed...what a waste. Eventually, I removed all the crappy HP drivers and software that came with it and only use it for printing.

All-in-Ones are just poorly implemented in general. We had one of the more expensive ones in our office, a color laser with scanning and faxing and the rest. The HP Toolbox (I think it was called) was a minefield of malfunctions and squirrely behavior. It would send the scans to the wrong desktops, or just into the void at random.
I also bought a Laserjet 1022 for my home network. The output is great, but printing in a mixed-OS environment is an excercise in frustration.

No kidding on the HP toolbox. That peice of software is total garbage.
Printing in general hasn't been the same since USB became the preferred connection, multiple TSRs became the norm, and manufacturers started installing software that reminds you to buy ink.

i wish i had read this page before just purchasing HP Photosmart all in one. I have had nothing but printing problems since I purchased it in early Sept 2006. I have contacted HP and they keep telling me that it is not the printer but windows problem and they won't do anything to help me solve the problem. All they tell me is to uninstall windows and re-install it to see if it fixes the problem and then another tells me to uninstall printer and re-install but no one can tell me how to fix printer. It keeps printing my first page of document when I ask it to print a different page, or sometimes it will start printing correct page and before printed it shifts over and prints the balance of the wrong page. Sometimes, it prints a page and then spits out every 2nd page. Boy, what a lemon it is

If someone at HP doesn't pay attention, they might find themselves in bankruptcy. They obviously don't have very good software writers. I'm still using my old PSC950 all-in-one printer and HP722C and haven't had any problems with them. I came close to upgrading several times, but it just seems the quality of their printers/software is taking a serious dive.

I have been using an hp psc2175Xi all in one. I purchased it when I bought my iMac with OS X10.1.2. After I upgraded to Mac's Tiger OS X10.4.7 the printer was absolutely possessed. My Mac guru installed a new hp driver and things got even worse. Printer would print last page, none of the document middle and some of the first page. Sometimes it would grab large hunks of paper (of course mangling them) other times rapidly spitting page after page of blank pages. When printing in grayscale, a popup messaage indicated color ink low. One Hp rep told me the printer and new Mac system are incompatible. Best to send in the printer for a trade-in, he said (trade in allowance about $18). But what about the $50. in ink I just purchased. A new hp comes with ink he said. Next rep: no, there is no compatibility problem. Need a new driver. Two times I completely exorcise all hp traces and reinstall 7.9. Now no pages/quality option to allow grayscale, fast-draft option. Go back to the old software 7.7.2 I'm now advised. No way!!! I'll use up the ink and buy a different brand. Any advice on brand?
